1. Mobile Crane Sizing & Pick Radii for Rooftop RTUs

Crane sizing depends not merely on unit weight, but on the horizontal pick radius from crane outriggers to the roof curb. A 10-ton packaged RTU located 120 feet back on an 8-story building typically requires a 150 to 200-ton all-terrain mobile crane with a luffing jib and engineered outrigger matting.

2. Basement Boiler Extraction: Gantry vs. Sectioning

Cast iron boilers can be split along nipple seams and unbolted into 300–800 lb individual sections for hand-truck or machine-skate extraction. Large Scotch Marine steel firetube boilers (10,000 to 50,000+ lbs) require cold cutting into manageable cylindrical rings and rigging through access shafts via modular hydraulic gantries.

3. Chiller Refrigerant Recovery Volume Calculations

Centrifugal and screw chillers hold between 1.5 to 2.5 lbs of refrigerant per ton of cooling capacity. A 500-ton chiller contains roughly 1,000 lbs of R-134a or R-123. To prevent cylinder overfilling, DOT regulations limit recovery cylinder liquid capacity to 80% at 77°F, requiring staged 1,000 lb DOT reclamation tanks.

4. Fuel Oil Storage Tank Sizing & Slurry Volume

When decommissioning underground storage tanks (USTs) in place, the volume of certified flowable concrete slurry or inert structural foam equals the gross vessel volume (e.g. 1,000 gallons = ~5 cubic yards of flowable fill). Interior cleaning must extract 100% of bottom sediment before filling.
